Pensacola X® continues to spotlight the individuals shaping the Gulf Coast’s business landscape. In this feature, we highlight Shantay Mbu, owner of Real Property Management Oceanfront, exploring how her journey began, what drives her, and the lessons she’s learned building something of her own.

In addition to leading her company, Shantay serves on the leadership board of the Association of Military Spouse Entrepreneurs (AMSE) as the Director of Partnerships and Sponsorships for the Pensacola, FL chapter, further extending her impact within the military and entrepreneurial community.

Pensacola X®: How did you get started with your company?

Shantay Mbu:
“I got started in property management through both personal experience and my professional background. During COVID, my spouse and I made a spontaneous decision to purchase a rental property. We initially operated it as a long-term rental for about two years and then transitioned it into a short-term rental to explore which strategy would be more profitable.

That experience was eye-opening. While short-term rentals can generate strong income during peak seasons, we found that in our area the season is relatively short. Between vacancies, higher overhead, and the day-to-day demands, long-term rentals ultimately proved to be more stable, scalable, and profitable. That realization gave me a real, hands-on understanding of what property owners truly need.”

“Around that same time, my husband and I came across a program called VetPreneur that helps veterans transition into business ownership through franchising. The first time we went through the program, we simply weren’t ready; we had to work on our credit, build capital, and get financially positioned.

About 6–8 months later, we came back stronger. We had paid down debt, saved money, and were in a completely different position. Through the program, we were presented with several franchise opportunities, and it just so happened that two of them were in property management.

We truly felt like that alignment wasn’t by accident. After doing our due diligence, we chose Real Property Management because of its strong reputation, proven systems, and the fact that it’s one of the largest and most established property management companies in North America.

At the same time, I was coming off over a decade in the mortgage and financial industry, and I was ready for something different. I had reached a point of burnout in corporate America, and when the opportunity came to build something of my own—something aligned with both my experience and our personal journey—I took it.

That’s how Real Property Management Oceanfront was born.”

Pensacola X®: What is your “why”?

Shantay Mbu:
“My ‘why’ is rooted in helping people create stability, freedom, and opportunity, especially within the military community. As a military spouse, I’ve seen firsthand how challenging it can be to build and maintain a career while constantly relocating and starting over.

I was fortunate to have a career, but looking back, I realize that if I had known earlier that I could build something like this for myself, I would have taken that path much sooner. That perspective drives me now.

I’m passionate about not only helping property owners turn their investments into consistent, reliable income, but also showing other military spouses and veterans that there are opportunities to create their own path without being limited by location or traditional career structures.

My ‘why’ is also deeply rooted in my children. I want to create a legacy for them and make them proud. Everything I’ve done, from going to school and earning my degree to stepping out and building this business, has been with them in mind. I want them to see what’s possible through hard work, faith, and perseverance, and to strive for even greater than what I’ve accomplished.

For me, this business is about more than property management. It’s about building something meaningful, creating flexibility for families like mine, and being an example of what’s possible when you take that leap.”

Pensacola X®: What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Shantay Mbu:
“I would say don’t wait until everything is perfect—just start. At the same time, be honest about where you are and be willing to do the work to get ready, like we had to.

Keep God first in everything that you do. Staying grounded in your faith will help guide your decisions, especially during uncertain times.

Also, don’t forget to pour into others along the way. I truly believe that you must give to receive. When you motivate, support, and uplift others, it always comes back to you in some way.

One thing I’ve learned from my own journey is that nothing is wasted. Every experience—whether it was working in finance, helping others purchase homes, managing my own rental property, or even trying different business ventures—prepared me for where I am today. What may feel like a detour could actually be part of your purpose.

Test and learn. My experience moving from long-term to short-term rentals and back taught me that what works in theory doesn’t always work in real life. Understanding your market is everything.

Lastly, stay consistent and build relationships. Your network, your reputation, and your discipline will take you further than anything else. If you stay committed and keep showing up, the results will come.”
