In the bustling community of Milton, Florida, one name stands out as a beacon of care, mentorship, and passion for healing—Ms. Sonja McCall-Strehlow.
With over 40 years of experience in massage therapy and more than two decades in esthetics, Ms. McCall-Strehlow is a local treasure who has touched the lives of thousands. From her small business, Sonja’s LLC, to her role as a long-time educator at Pensacola State College, she exemplifies what it means to give back to her community.
We had the privilege of sitting down with Ms. McCall-Strehlow to learn more about her inspiring journey, her passion for helping others, and the wisdom she shares with aspiring professionals.
How did you get started in massage therapy?
Reflecting on her beginnings, Ms. McCall-Strehlow smiles. “It’s funny to think back and realize how long I’ve been in this industry,” she says. At just 18 years old, she began her career under the mentorship of Dr. Michael C. Brooks, DC, in Pace, Florida. After gaining foundational skills, she continued working with Dr. ML Woodruff, DC, in Pensacola, where she not only became the lead massage therapist but also managed three clinics with a staff of 12.
“Those early years taught me so much about business, staff management, and, most importantly, caring for people,” she shares. Her passion for helping others has been the cornerstone of her career. “Massage therapy has never been just a job for me. It’s a healing gift from God, allowing me to help people heal physically and spiritually.”
In 1989, she expanded her horizons, opening her own business in a non-regulated state. Today, at 60 years old, Ms. McCall-Strehlow continues to operate her business, working part-time on Saturdays. She’s proud to use her skills to help pay for her daughter’s college education and to mentor fellow therapists, including three of her past students who now work in her business.
What is your why/passion?
Ms. McCall-Strehlow’s passion is simple yet profound: people. “Helping others is what drives me,” she explains. “When someone is in pain and you can touch them in a way that helps them heal—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually—that’s a powerful gift.”
She views massage therapy as a holistic practice, addressing the body, mind, and spirit. “In today’s fast-paced world, people rarely take time to care for themselves. When clients come to me, they’re finally slowing down, and I feel honored to help them heal and feel better about themselves.”
Beyond her hands-on work, Ms. McCall-Strehlow is deeply committed to mentorship and community service. Since 2001, she has taught massage therapy and esthetics at Pensacola State College, where she became the program coordinator in 2007. Over the past 24 years, she has taught and mentored more than 2,000 students.
Her passion for giving back extends beyond the classroom. “Just this week, my students and I donated over 250 blankets, socks, and hats for the homeless drive at the Brownsville Community Center. Teaching students the value of community service is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.”
What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
Ms. McCall-Strehlow offers heartfelt advice for those embarking on a career in massage therapy. “Be in this for the right reasons,” she emphasizes. “Have clear intentions in your heart to help others heal and recover from life’s traumas and pain.”
She encourages new therapists to approach their work with a spirit of kindness and healing. “Massage therapy isn’t just about technique—it’s about being a light to others. Provide healthy, healing touch with intention and let your clients know they matter.”
